IPTV sound but no picture (or no sound): fixes

Hearing the programme without seeing it — or the reverse — means the stream arrives but one part of it can't be shown. Here is how to find which, and fix it.

The channel starts, you hear the presenter, but the screen stays black. Or the opposite: a perfect picture and total silence. IPTV sound but no picture is different from a channel that doesn't load at all: the stream reaches your device, and one of its parts — the video or the audio — cannot be decoded or displayed. The cause is usually a format, a track or a device setting. This guide goes through each case and shows what you can check in Klyvo Play and on your device.

Klyvo Play is a player. It does not provide any channel, film or series: you connect the Xtream-compatible service or M3U link you already have and are authorized to use. How a stream is encoded is decided by the provider that sends it.

Why you get sound but no picture

A live channel or a film is a container holding separate tracks: one or more video tracks, one or more audio tracks, sometimes subtitles. Your device decodes each one. If the audio decodes and the video does not, you hear without seeing. The most common reasons:

  • A video format the device can't display. A 4K stream in HEVC (H.265), a 10-bit picture or an HDR format can be too much for an older HD stick, box or TV, which then shows nothing while the sound plays.
  • An HDR picture on a screen that doesn't support it. Depending on the device and the TV, the result can be a black or very dark picture.
  • A stream that only contains sound. Many playlists include radio stations or audio-only channels: a black screen with sound is then perfectly normal.
  • A damaged or changing stream at the source. If a channel worked yesterday and plays only sound today, the provider may have changed how it is encoded.

What Klyvo Play's player can play

Klyvo Play uses a VLC-based engine, chosen precisely for its wide format support: it plays MKV and AVI files, HEVC/H.265 video, and Dolby or DTS audio, where some players stop. On Windows, the same breadth comes through an ffmpeg-based bridge. Details in playing MKV, HEVC and AC3.

A wide engine does not change what the hardware can display, though. If the device or the TV cannot show a resolution or an HDR format, no app can make it appear. That is why trying the same channel in another quality is often the quickest fix.

IPTV sound but no picture: the fixes

  1. Try the HD or SD version of the channel. Many playlists carry the same channel in several qualities; a lower one often uses a format every device can display.
  2. Try another channel of the same bouquet. If all 4K channels show sound only and HD channels play fine, the device does not handle that 4K format.
  3. Check that it isn't a radio. Audio-only channels have no picture by design.
  4. Run Settings → Connection & stream test. Its result by picture quality (4K, HD, SD) tells you which quality your connection and source can carry smoothly.
  5. Play the demo. From the first screen, Explore the demo plays royalty-free open films such as Tears of Steel or Elephants Dream. If they show a picture, the device is fine and the issue is that stream's format.
  6. Restart the device, and on a TV, try another HDMI port or cable.

For films and series, check the player's quality options too: Settings → Playback → Video quality offers Automatic, Data saver, Standard and Highest. On a TV, the films and series player's Playback settings also list the video tracks when a file carries several — another one may display correctly.

Picture but no sound

The reverse case — IPTV picture without sound — has its own usual suspects:

  • The wrong audio track. Films and some channels carry several audio tracks (languages, commentary, audio description). Open Audio · Subs in the player and choose another track. Klyvo Play picks the track in your app language when the file has one, but you can always change it by hand — see subtitles and audio tracks.
  • Multi-Live. When two live channels play side by side, the sound comes from one of them only — the one you choose. Select the other pane to hear it. More in watching two channels at once.
  • Mute and volume. Obvious, but frequent: the TV, the soundbar or the device itself may be muted or set to a different output.
  • Surround sound through HDMI. Some boxes send surround audio as is to the TV or the soundbar. If that equipment does not support the format, it stays silent. In the device's own sound settings (not in the app), switching the output to stereo is worth a try.
  • Bluetooth headphones or speakers still connected to the device can take the sound away from the TV.

Know what your device can display

Most "sound but no picture" reports come from a mismatch between the stream and the screen. A few minutes spent checking your equipment saves a lot of guessing:

  • TV sticks and boxes exist in HD and 4K versions. An HD-only Fire TV Stick, for example, is not designed for 4K streams, while the 4K models are. Look at the exact model in the device's own settings.
  • Apple TV: Apple TV 4K models handle 4K and HDR; the older Apple TV HD is limited to HD.
  • The TV itself must accept the signal: a 4K box plugged into an HD TV, or an HDR picture sent to a TV without HDR, can lead to a dark or empty picture.
  • Phones, tablets and Windows PCs usually display HD streams without trouble; very high bitrates in 4K can still be demanding on older models.

Once you know the limits of your setup, the rule is simple: pick the quality of each channel that your weakest link can show. Our guide to installing Klyvo Play on every device lists the platforms where the app is available today.

Sound and picture out of sync

A delay between lips and voice usually comes from the chain after the player: a soundbar or an amplifier that processes the sound, or a TV picture mode that adds delay. Many TVs have a game or low-latency picture mode, and many soundbars an audio delay setting. If only one channel is out of sync, it is that stream at the source.

When to contact your provider

If a channel plays sound only on every device you own, in every quality, while the demo and other channels show a picture, the stream itself is at fault. Send your provider the channel name, the time, and what you hear and see. They are the only ones who can change how the channel is encoded.

FAQ

Why do 4K channels give me sound but no picture on my stick? Many entry-level sticks and older TVs only display HD. A 4K HEVC or HDR stream exceeds what they can show. Use the HD version, or a device that supports 4K — see IPTV in 4K, HDR and HEVC.

Does Klyvo Play need a codec pack? No. The VLC-based engine is built into the app on every platform; there is nothing extra to install.

A film has picture but the dialogue is missing. Why? The selected audio track may be music and effects only, or another language. Choose another track in Audio · Subs.

Can the app convert a channel into a format my TV supports? No. The player decodes what it receives; it does not re-encode streams. Plans for the app itself are on the pricing page.
