You can watch IPTV on an old non-smart TV as long as it has an HDMI input: plug in a small streaming device such as a Fire TV Stick or an Apple TV, install an IPTV player on it, and connect the service you already have. The TV only displays the picture; the device does all the smart work — the app, the network, the decoding. Most TVs sold since the late 2000s have at least one HDMI port, so this solution covers a lot of “old” TVs. For even older sets without HDMI, a converter can help, with limits we explain below.
Klyvo Play is a player. It provides no channel, film or series: you connect the service you already have and are authorized to use, with its Xtream login or its M3U link.
Why an HDMI device turns an old TV into an IPTV TV
A non-smart TV has no app store and no internet connection, but it does not need them. An HDMI device brings everything in one small box: Wi-Fi (or Ethernet with an adapter), an app store, a remote and a video decoder. It is often a better experience than the built-in system of a smart TV a few years old, because the device is recent and receives updates. It is also the answer for TVs whose smart system has no IPTV app, such as Samsung and LG — see IPTV on Samsung and LG smart TVs.
Which device for an old HD or Full HD TV?
- A Fire TV Stick is the most affordable option and installs Klyvo Play from the Amazon Appstore. On a 720p (HD Ready) or 1080p (Full HD) TV, a 4K model is not necessary for the picture — but a recent stick with more memory is more comfortable with large playlists and allows Multi-Live, which is not available on 1 GB sticks.
- An Apple TV suits households that already use an iPhone or iPad. The subscription offered in the app through your Apple Account covers iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
- A Windows PC or laptop with an HDMI output also works with the Klyvo Play Windows app, if one is already near the TV.
Android TV and Google TV boxes will be able to run Klyvo Play when its TV app on Google Play is released; it is coming soon. For buying advice on sticks, read the best IPTV app for Fire TV Stick.
Set up IPTV on your old TV, step by step
- Plug the device into a free HDMI port of the TV and connect its power adapter to a wall socket. Old TVs rarely have a USB port powerful enough for a stick.
- Switch the TV to that HDMI input with the Source or Input button of the TV remote.
- Follow the device's first set-up (language, Wi-Fi, account), then install Klyvo Play from its app store.
- On first launch, note the address in MAC format and the Device Key, then attach your playlist to these codes on the client portal from your phone, or type your Xtream login or M3U link under Connect your source.
- Choose up to three countries for live TV and run Settings → Connection & stream test to see what your line handles.

No HDMI port? The converter option and its limits
Very old TVs only have SCART (Péritel) or composite (yellow, red and white) inputs. Small HDMI-to-SCART or HDMI-to-composite converters exist: the device plugs into the converter, the converter into the TV. It can work, with real limits:
- The picture becomes standard definition, whatever the stream: HD and 4K channels lose most of their detail.
- The shape may be 4:3: on a square-ish screen, widescreen content shows black bars or is stretched depending on the TV.
- Compatibility varies: some converters do not accept every resolution or every device. Choose one with its own power supply, and buy from a seller that accepts returns.
- Text is harder to read at low resolution, so browsing long lists is less comfortable.
It is a good way to give a second life to a kitchen or garage TV, but for a main TV, a recent screen with HDMI will make your service look far better.
Picture settings on an older TV
- Turn off overscan on the TV: look for a picture size option called Just Scan, Screen Fit, Full Pixel or 1:1 (names vary). Without it, the edges of the picture and of the menus can be cut off. Fire TV also offers a display calibration screen in its display settings.
- Set the device's resolution to Auto, or to the TV's native resolution (720p or 1080p) if the picture looks soft.
- In Klyvo Play, the picture fits the screen by default on TV; switch the player to fill if you prefer no black bars — see picture format and black bars.
- Avoid forced HDR: older TVs do not support it; leave the device's dynamic range setting on automatic or SDR.
Sound and remote: making old and new work together
Many older TVs do not support HDMI-CEC, the function that lets one remote control everything over HDMI. Without it, you will use the TV remote to switch the TV on and the device's remote for the rest. On Fire TV, remotes with TV buttons can learn to control the volume and power of many TVs through the Equipment Control settings. If the TV's speakers are weak, connect a soundbar or speaker to the TV's audio output, or pair Bluetooth headphones with the Fire TV or Apple TV. Our IPTV remote control tips cover the player shortcuts: OK, Back, ⏪ / ⏩ in films, and the channel keys on remotes that have them.
Network: the part that matters most
An old TV is often in a secondary room, far from the router. Live streams need a steady connection, so check the Wi-Fi signal where the TV is. If it is weak, use an Ethernet adapter for the stick, a powerline adapter kit, or a mesh Wi-Fi point. In Klyvo Play, the Live TV buffer under Settings → Playback stays on Automatic by default and absorbs short drops; on a really irregular Wi-Fi, Reinforced — 20 s can help. Klyvo Play also switches to a lower-memory mode by itself on devices with less than 3 GB of memory, so a modest stick stays responsive.
What an old TV gets with Klyvo Play
Once the device is plugged in, the age of the TV no longer limits the app. You get live TV organized by category and bouquet, with up to three countries first and See all channels for the full list; a TV guide when your service provides one, and catch-up when it supports it; films and series with posters, seasons, Continue watching and My list; and search across live, films and series. Family profiles and a Kids profile with a parental PIN make a shared TV easy to use. The only things the TV itself still decides are resolution, HDR and sound quality.
