IPTV beginner's checklist: start right in 12 steps

New to IPTV? Twelve steps, in order, from understanding what you need to watching your first channel comfortably — with links to every detailed guide.

This IPTV beginner's checklist takes you from zero to your first evening of live TV in twelve steps. In short: understand that a player and a service are two different things, make sure you have an authorized service and its login, check your devices and your Internet speed, install the player from an official store, connect your source, then organise the app around your family. Each step links to a detailed guide if you want to go further. Tick them off one by one and you will avoid most of the problems beginners run into.

Klyvo Play is a player. It provides no channel, film or series: you connect a service you already have and are authorized to use, with an Xtream login or an M3U link.

Before you install: understand and prepare

Step 1 — Understand the two pieces. IPTV is television delivered over the Internet. You need a service (the provider, which holds the channels, films and series and the rights to them) and a player (the app that displays them). Klyvo Play is the player. Read what is IPTV and IPTV player or IPTV provider if this is new to you.

Step 2 — Have an authorized service and its login. Your service gives you either an Xtream login (a server URL, a username and a password) or an M3U link, and sometimes a TV guide (XMLTV) address. Keep these details somewhere safe. If you are still choosing a service, our neutral criteria are in how to recognise a reliable service, and the legal side in is IPTV legal?. The difference between the two formats is explained in Xtream login or M3U link.

Step 3 — Check your devices. Klyvo Play runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (App Store), Android phones and tablets (Google Play), Fire TV devices (Amazon Appstore) and Windows 10/11 PCs. Android TV / Google TV on Google Play is coming soon. There is no app for Samsung or LG smart TV systems, Roku or Mac: on a Samsung or LG TV, plug in a Fire TV Stick or an Apple TV. The full list is on supported devices.

Step 4 — Check your Internet. Count about 2 Mbit/s for SD, 5 for HD and 15 for 4K per stream, plus a margin for the rest of the household. For the TV, a cable or the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band makes a big difference. See internet speed needed for IPTV.

Install and connect

Step 5 — Install from an official store. Use the App Store, Google Play, the Amazon Appstore or, for Windows, our download page. Never install a modified copy shared on a forum or in a message: it can steal your logins. See avoid modded APKs and how to install Klyvo Play.

Step 6 — Try the demo. On the first screen, Explore the demo opens a royalty-free sample catalogue, with no source needed. It is a good way to learn the interface — menus, posters, the player — before connecting anything.

Step 7 — Note your device codes. The welcome screen shows an address that looks like a MAC address and a Device Key. They identify this installation of the app (they are not your hardware's MAC address). Your provider, or you on the customer portal, can attach your playlist to these codes, so nothing needs to be typed on the TV. See MAC address and Device Key.

Step 8 — Connect your source. Either enter your Xtream login or paste your M3U link in the app, or let your provider attach the playlist to your codes — the app picks it up by itself. You can keep several playlists on one device in My playlists. Step-by-step guides: enter an Xtream login and add an M3U playlist.

Set the app up for your home

Step 9 — Choose your countries. Right after connecting, the app asks which countries you watch: pick up to three. Every channel, film and series of your playlist is filed under its country, and the rest stays reachable. See organize channels by country.

Step 10 — Create profiles. On a family TV, give each person a profile: everyone keeps their own My list and Continue watching. Turn on a Kids profile for children, and set a parental PIN so they stay in it. The adult (-18) section is hidden by default. See multiple profiles and IPTV parental control.

Step 11 — Check the TV guide. Open Live and look at what is on now and next. The guide comes from your provider and can be completed with an XMLTV link added to the playlist. If some channels have no guide, your provider gives none for them. See TV guide (EPG).

Step 12 — Run the connection test. In Settings → Connection & stream test, the app measures your Internet and a few seconds of a real channel from your source, then tells you whether 4K, HD or SD will be smooth. Do it once on each TV. See test your connection for 4K, HD and SD.

Your first evening: features worth knowing

  • Search finds a channel, film or series across your whole source from the second letter you type.
  • My list keeps your favourite channels, films and series in the order you choose.
  • Continue watching resumes a film or episode where you stopped.
  • Catch-up replays past programmes when your provider supports timeshift — see catch-up and replay.
  • Audio and subtitles can be changed during playback — see subtitles and audio track.
  • Multi-Live shows two live channels at once (not on 1 GB TV sticks) — see Multi-Live.
  • Picture format switches between fill and fit — see remove black bars.

Five beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking the app comes with channels. It does not: the content always comes from your service.
  • Watching on two devices with a one-stream line. The second stream is refused, or both stutter. Check how many connections your line allows.
  • Choosing 4K on a short connection. HD that plays smoothly beats 4K that freezes. Let the connection test decide.
  • Typing the server address with a typo. One missing character and the login is refused. Copy it carefully, or let your provider attach the playlist to your device codes.
  • Installing a copy from an unknown website. Always use the official store for your device.

Avoiding these five mistakes solves, in practice, a large share of the questions beginners ask in their first week.

When something does not work

Most beginner problems have simple causes. A login refused usually means a typo in the server, username or password. A channel that freezes is usually the Wi-Fi, a line busy on another device, or the source. An expired line is shown as such in the app. Start with these guides:

Trial and licence

Every new device gets a free 10-day trial of the full app — every feature, no restriction. After that, a licence keeps it running; the terms are on the pricing page. The trial of the player is separate from your service's subscription: one pays for the app, the other for the content.

FAQ

Do I need to create an account? No. Klyvo Play needs no account or email; the device codes identify the installation.

Can I use the same service on several devices? Install the app on each device and connect the same source. Check how many simultaneous streams your service allows.

I have no service yet. Can I still try the app? Yes, with the built-in demo, which uses royalty-free sample content.

Which device should I start with? The one you will watch on most. For a TV without a supported app, a Fire TV Stick or an Apple TV is the simplest choice.

Where do I get help? Our FAQ and support page answer most questions about the app; questions about channels go to your service.
